Shabbos empowers reciprocal teshuvah
Shabbat Shuva · teshuvah · Shabbos · Throne of Glory · dveikus
Shabbos Teshuvah — for Shabbos assists teshuvah, as it is written, "Seek Hashem when He is found" (Yeshayahu 55:6), [and] "For My thoughts are not your thoughts" (Yeshayahu 55:8).
The Sefas Emes explains that Shabbos Teshuvah is so named because Shabbos itself aids the work of returning to Hashem, drawing on the haftarah verses about seeking Hashem "when He is found."
The explanation: this is what one must return for — for it was Hashem's will that all the ways and thoughts of Bnei Yisrael should be attached to their root, as it says, "In all your ways know Him" (Mishlei 3:6).
The essence of teshuvah is to realign all of one's ways and thoughts with their divine Source — "in all your ways know Him" — so that no part of life is severed from Hashem.
Da'as means connection and attachment (dveikus).
"Knowing" Hashem is not merely intellectual; da'as denotes binding oneself to Him in dveikus.
And the pasuk concludes, "As the heavens are higher [than the earth]... so are My ways higher than your ways" (Yeshayahu 55:9).
The verse stresses the vast gap between Hashem's "ways" and ours, which seems to make connection impossible.
And seemingly this is like "making the established depend on the unestablished," for His words are exalted to infinity, far more than the height of the heavens over the earth.
The comparison seems odd: Hashem's ways are infinitely beyond ours — incomparably more than heaven is above earth — so why use this limited analogy at all?
But rather, this comes to teach that if Bnei Yisrael raise their deeds and ways to the heavens, then automatically it is written, "Return to Me and I will return to you" (Malachi 3:7).
The analogy actually teaches reciprocity: just as heaven and earth correspond, when Bnei Yisrael lift their conduct heavenward, Hashem responds in kind — "return to Me, and I will return to you."
And it is brought in the Pesikta, the parable of the king's son who was ashamed to return to his father, and the father said, "Behold, I too am returning" — see there.
The Pesikta tells of a prince too ashamed to make the long journey back; the king meets him partway, saying "I too will return toward you" — Hashem comes toward the penitent to make teshuvah possible.
For it is taught that teshuvah reaches up to the Throne of Glory.
Teshuvah has the power to ascend all the way to the Kisei HaKavod (the Throne of Glory).
Now, the souls of Yisrael are engraved beneath the Throne of Glory, and to the degree of the completeness of the Throne — that Bnei Yisrael refine the "form" beneath the Throne of Glory — then, as it were, Hashem sits upon the Throne, as it says, "[You are holy,] enthroned upon the praises of Yisrael" (Tehillim 22:4).
The neshamos of Bnei Yisrael are engraved beneath Hashem's Throne. As they purify themselves, they perfect that "form" beneath the Throne, and thereby — so to speak — they enable Hashem to "sit" upon His Throne, for He is "enthroned upon the praises of Yisrael."
It emerges that the Throne of Glory is the connector and intermediary between Yisrael and their Father in Heaven.
The Throne of Glory serves as the bridge linking Bnei Yisrael below to their Father in Heaven above.
And just as Bnei Yisrael nullify nature and elevate themselves to cleave to the root of their souls, so too, as it were, Hashem contracts His Shechinah to draw near to them.
This is the reciprocity of teshuvah: as Bnei Yisrael transcend the natural world (bittul) and rise toward their root, Hashem correspondingly "contracts" His Shechinah (tzimtzum) downward to meet them.
And for this was the main purpose of Creation.
This mutual drawing-near between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael is the very purpose for which the world was created.
And on Shabbos it is written that He is elevated and sits upon His Throne of Glory, and it is a good gift.
On Shabbos, Hashem is "enthroned" upon His Throne of Glory of His own accord — a precious gift granted to Bnei Yisrael without their having to earn it.
And what Bnei Yisrael must do during the weekdays — to repair their deeds and prepare the "form" so that Hashem is "enthroned upon the praises of Yisrael" — this comes about of itself on Shabbos.
The painstaking weekday labor of refining oneself to perfect the "form" beneath the Throne happens automatically, as a gift, on Shabbos.
It emerges that Hashem begins to return to us on Shabbos — all the more so, then, that we must return after this, as we request, "Return us to You, Hashem, and we shall return" (Eichah 5:21).
Since Hashem Himself initiates the return toward us on Shabbos, surely we are then obligated to respond and return to Him — "Return us, and we shall return."
And in truth, throughout all of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah it is so, that Hashem is called "the King of Justice" and sits upon the Throne; therefore it is a time of teshuvah.
During the Ten Days of Repentance, Hashem is "the King of Justice" seated upon His Throne — His nearness on the Throne is precisely what makes this season ripe for teshuvah.
And on Shabbos all the more so, as explained.
Shabbos within this period intensifies the opportunity for teshuvah even further.
And one should strengthen himself greatly on Shabbos Teshuvah, which is the first Shabbos of the year. And as Chazal said, "Had Yisrael kept the first Shabbos, no nation or tongue would have ruled over them" — so it is every year, when a new order is established, and according to the keeping of the first Shabbos, one merits [accordingly] for the whole year.
Shabbos Teshuvah is the year's first Shabbos and therefore especially powerful. Just as Chazal taught that keeping the very first Shabbos would have rendered Yisrael invincible, so each year a fresh "order" is set, and how one keeps this first Shabbos determines the spiritual standing of the entire year.
And it is taught: one who keeps Shabbos... is forgiven... [even for idolatry like the generation of Enosh].
Chazal teach that observing Shabbos properly brings forgiveness even for the gravest sins.
For the main blemish of sins is as it says, "Your iniquities... separate between you [and your God]" (Yeshayahu 59:2).
The fundamental damage of sin is not the act itself but the separation it creates — building a barrier between a person and Hashem.
And on Shabbos it is written, "It is a sign between Me and you" (Shemos 31:13), and it nullifies the dividing screen.
Shabbos, the "sign between Me and you," dissolves the very barrier that sin erects — restoring the direct bond between Bnei Yisrael and Hashem.
Therefore one is able to return to Him in teshuvah more easily.
With the dividing barrier removed on Shabbos, teshuvah becomes far easier to achieve.
And we say in Kiddush, "with love and with favor (ratzon) You have given us [the Shabbos] as an inheritance."
The Kiddush phrase "with love and with favor" hints at two distinct modes through which Shabbos is bestowed.
And it may be explained that these correspond to the measure of the tzaddikim and the measure of the baalei teshuvah.
"Love" and "favor" represent two paths to Hashem: that of the perfectly righteous and that of the penitent.
For "love" is from the side of good deeds and the dveikus of the tzaddik according to his deeds.
"Love" (ahavah) corresponds to the tzaddik, whose closeness to Hashem is earned and proportionate to his good deeds.
But "favor (ratzon)" is a decree, by virtue of some reason that He wills it so, and the Holy One, blessed be He, desires teshuvah.
"Favor" (ratzon) is not earned by deeds but flows from Hashem's pure will — and it is His will to accept the baal teshuvah, even one who lacks merits.
And one may hint at what Chazal said, "If they would keep two Shabbosos they would immediately be redeemed" — this is Shabbos HaGadol, the aspect of the tzaddikim, and Shabbos Teshuvah, the aspect of the baalei teshuvah, "with love and with favor," as explained.
The two Shabbosos whose observance would bring immediate geulah are Shabbos HaGadol (corresponding to the tzaddikim, "with love") and Shabbos Teshuvah (corresponding to the baalei teshuvah, "with favor"). Together, both paths — the righteous and the penitent — bring the redemption.
Summary: Shabbos Teshuvah is so named because Shabbos itself empowers teshuvah. Teshuvah means realigning all one's ways and thoughts with their divine root through dveikus, and it works reciprocally: as Bnei Yisrael raise their deeds heavenward and nullify nature, Hashem contracts His Shechinah to draw near — "return to Me and I will return to you." The neshamos of Yisrael are engraved beneath the Throne of Glory, and refining themselves perfects that "form" so Hashem is "enthroned upon Israel's praises." On Shabbos this happens as a free gift; Shabbos is the "sign" that dissolves the barrier of sin, making teshuvah easy. As the year's first Shabbos, it sets the tone for the whole year. Finally, "with love and with favor" hints at the two redemptive paths — the tzaddik (love) and the baal teshuvah (favor).
