Guarding Shabbos as a path back to remembering
On the pasuk: "Only [keep My Shabbosos]… My Shabbosos you shall guard."
The Sefas Emes opens on the wording of "shamor" (guarding) Shabbos and asks why the Torah uses this language here rather than "zachor" (remember).
For before the cheit (sin of the Golden Calf) it was stated, "Remember the day of Shabbos."
Before Bnei Yisrael fell through the cheit ha'eigel, the Torah's command was the higher level of "zachor" — remembering, a positive grasp of Shabbos.
And even though "zachor" and "shamor" were uttered in a single utterance,
Chazal teach that Hashem said both "remember" and "guard" in one miraculous word at Matan Torah, so they are essentially bound together.
nevertheless "shamor" was not mentioned by name relative to the aspect of "zachor," which is the essential one.
"Zachor" is the primary, inner level; "shamor" — guarding against violation — was left unnamed because it is secondary to that higher remembering.
And at Matan Torah Bnei Yisrael were on the level of "zachor."
When they received the Torah, Bnei Yisrael stood at the elevated madreigah of "zachor" — a direct, positive bond with the kedushah of Shabbos.
And "shamor" was present automatically.
When one truly lives the inner "zachor," the guarding of "shamor" follows on its own, without needing to be commanded separately.
But here begins the mitzvah of guarding Shabbos.
Only after the cheit, in this parsha, does the Torah introduce "shamor" as its own mitzvah — a sign that the people had descended from the loftier level.
And as the Chachomim taught, "Whoever is included in 'guarding' is included in 'remembering'" — that through the guarding one is able to come to the aspect of remembering.
"Shamor" is now the pathway back up: by faithfully guarding Shabbos one can climb back to the inner "zachor" that was lost.
But the lofty level of Bnei Yisrael before the cheit was higher than this, as has been explained.
Originally Bnei Yisrael did not need to ascend through "shamor"; they already stood in "zachor" itself — a madreigah above the process of guarding-and-then-remembering.
Summary: Before the cheit ha'eigel, Bnei Yisrael lived Shabbos on the inner level of "zachor," from which "shamor" flowed automatically. After the fall, the Torah introduces "shamor" as its own mitzvah — now the necessary path by which a person guards Shabbos in order to climb back to the higher remembering.
