Torah draws Yisrael close even after sin

בענין שמחת תורה בחג הסוכות. להראות שזוכין לכל זה ע"י התורה.

Concerning Simchas Torah on the festival of Sukkos: it comes to show that all of this is merited through the Torah.

Simchas Torah, placed at the close of Sukkos, demonstrates that everything attained over the festival — the closeness, the purification, the joy — is achieved by means of the Torah.

כדכ' לקח טוב דרשו במד' תרומה מקח שהמוכר נמכר עמו ע"ש אף סוררים לשכון כו' שעל ידי התורה נתקרבו גם אחר החטא.

As it is written, "a good acquisition [lekach tov] I have given you" (Mishlei 4:2) — they expounded in the Midrash on Terumah: a purchase in which the seller is sold along with it; see there — "even the rebellious, that [Hashem] should dwell [among them]" (Tehillim 68:19) — that through the Torah they were drawn close even after the sin.

The Midrash teaches that with Torah, the "seller" — Hashem Himself — comes along with the purchase. So through Torah, Hashem dwells even among "the rebellious," drawing Bnei Yisrael close again even after they have sinned.

וכמו כן בימים אלו שנטהרו בנ"י ונכנסו תחת כנפי השכינה בסוכה הכל בכח התורה כנ"ל:

And likewise in these days, when Bnei Yisrael have been purified and have entered beneath the wings of the Shechinah in the sukkah, it is all through the power of the Torah, as above.

The whole movement of the season — being cleansed through teshuvah and entering the sheltering embrace of the Shechinah in the sukkah — is empowered by the Torah, which brings Hashem Himself near even after sin.

Summary: Simchas Torah at the end of Sukkos shows that all the closeness of the season is attained through the Torah. As the Midrash teaches on "a good acquisition," Torah is a purchase in which the "Seller," Hashem, comes along with it — so through Torah He dwells even among the rebellious, drawing Bnei Yisrael close after sin. Thus the purification and entering beneath the wings of the Shechinah in the sukkah are all accomplished by the power of the Torah.
