Inherited yearning of the Avos through the sukkah
Sukkah · Avos · Zechus Avos · Bitachon · Above Nature
"I remember for you the kindness of your youth" (Yirmiyahu 2:2).
Hashem recalls how Bnei Yisrael followed Him into the wilderness in their "youth" — an act of pure devotion that He treasures and keeps in remembrance.
As it is written: "He made a remembrance for His wonders" (Tehillim 111:4).
Hashem does not let His miracles fade; He builds into the world a lasting "remembrance" so that their effect continues for later generations.
And just as the Holy One performed wonders for our forefathers and left from them a remembrance for the generations,
The miracles of the past were not one-time events; Hashem left a permanent imprint of them that endures for all later generations.
so too the merit (zechus) of our forefathers was likewise above nature, and from this too a remembrance remained for the generations.
Just as the miracles left a lasting trace, so the Avos' supernatural merit was deposited into their descendants as an enduring inheritance — a "remembrance" that lives on in every generation.
And through fulfilling the mitzvah of sukkah one is able to find this very yearning — to be drawn after Hashem, to leave the bounds of nature.
The sukkah awakens in us the same longing the Avos had: to be pulled after Hashem and to step beyond the natural order into a life of bitachon and closeness to Him.
As Chazal said: "Leave your permanent dwelling" (Sukkah 2a).
Living in the sukkah means leaving the fixed, "permanent" home that represents reliance on the natural order, and trusting instead in Hashem's protection.
And presumably, when the Holy One remembers this merit for the generations, surely they were drawn after Him together with all their descendants.
Since Hashem "remembers" this merit for all generations, the very remembering implies that the Avos' devotion drew their descendants along with them after Hashem.
For the deeds of the fathers avail the children.
This is the principle of "ma'aseh avos siman l'banim" — what the Avos accomplished is not merely a sign but an effective force that empowers their children to follow the same path.
In accordance with the preparation of the fathers, who desired and yearned that they and all their descendants be drawn after the Creator, may He be blessed — and so it was fulfilled.
The Avos deliberately yearned that their longing for Hashem be inherited by all their offspring; because they "prepared" it with such ratzon, that very yearning was implanted in us and is realized whenever we follow Hashem out of the natural order, as in the mitzvah of sukkah.
Summary: Just as Hashem leaves a lasting "remembrance" of His wonders, the supernatural merit of the Avos endures as an inheritance in every generation — and the mitzvah of sukkah, leaving our "permanent dwelling," awakens in us the Avos' own yearning to be drawn after Hashem beyond the bounds of nature, which they consciously prepared to pass on to all their descendants.
