Purim teshuvah from fear ripening into love

בפסוק נקהלו ועמוד על נפשם.

On the verse, "They gathered together and stood up for their lives" (Esther 9:16).

The Sefas Emes takes up the phrase describing how the Jews assembled and stood up to defend themselves during the events of Purim.

הוא בחי' בעלי תשובה שאמרו חז"ל במקום שבעלי תשובה עומדין אין צדיקים גמורין יכולין לעמוד.

This is the aspect of baalei teshuvah (penitents), of whom Chazal said: "In the place where baalei teshuvah stand, even completely righteous tzaddikim cannot stand" (Berachos 34b).

The "standing" in the verse alludes to the unique height attained by baalei teshuvah, a level that surpasses even that of perfectly righteous tzaddikim.

וזהו בודאי כששב מאהבה.

And this is certainly when one returns out of love.

That elevated level of the penitent applies specifically to teshuvah me'ahavah — repentance driven by love of Hashem, which transforms sins into merits.

ומקודם בשעת הגזירה בוודאי שבו מיראה ואח"כ כשנעשה להם הנס שבו מאהבה ונתעלו למעלה מהטבע וזהו ועמוד על נפשם:

And beforehand, at the time of the decree, they certainly returned out of fear; and afterward, when the miracle was wrought for them, they returned out of love and were elevated above nature — and this is "and stood up for their lives."

Haman's decree first drove Bnei Yisrael to teshuvah from yirah (fear); once the miracle of salvation came, their repentance ripened into teshuvah me'ahavah, lifting them above the natural order — the deeper meaning of their "standing up for their lives."

Summary: The Sefas Emes reads "they stood up for their lives" as the elevated standing of the baal teshuvah. Bnei Yisrael first did teshuvah out of fear under Haman's decree, but after the Purim miracle their repentance turned into teshuvah me'ahavah, raising them above nature to the level where even perfect tzaddikim cannot stand.
