Hidden Torah endures through concealment

It is brought in the Gemara: From where in the Torah is Esther alluded to? As it is written, "And I will surely hide My face" (Devarim 31:18) — for the word "astir" (I will hide) hints at "Esther."

Chazal find Esther hinted in the Torah specifically in a verse about hester panim (the hiding of Hashem's face), teaching that the entire story of Purim unfolds davka within concealment.

And they also said that they re-accepted the Torah in the days of Achashverosh.

At Sinai the Torah was accepted under coercion, but in the time of Purim Bnei Yisrael willingly took it upon themselves anew.

For in truth the Torah is the beginning of everything and the end of everything.

The Torah is the inner source from which all creation flows and the ultimate purpose toward which it returns.

About this it is said, "Better is the end of a matter than its beginning" (Koheles 7:8).

The hidden conclusion, revealed through Torah, is greater than the open beginning.

The explanation: Bnei Yisrael have an eternal dveikus (attachment) to the Torah.

The bond between Bnei Yisrael and Torah is constant, never broken even in times of decline.

Therefore Bnei Yisrael are called "reishis" (beginning), for even in days of descent they remain attached to the beginning.

Because their inner point clings to the Torah's root, they are always connected to the source, even during galus.

At the time of receiving the Torah there was a revelation of the Torah's beginning, and it was in public (b'farhesya), and therefore the (evil) eye had power over it.

The open, public revelation at Sinai was vulnerable, like anything exposed openly, which is why the luchos were broken.

But the power of the Torah which is in concealment endures forever within Yisrael.

The hidden, inner dimension of Torah cannot be touched or broken; it lasts eternally within the soul of Yisrael.

"And I (Anochi)" — this is the "Anochi" of the Ten Commandments.

The "Anochi" in the verse about hiding is the very same "Anochi Hashem" that opened the Aseres HaDibros — Hashem's hidden presence is the Torah itself.

"I will surely hide."

Davka through the double concealment, the eternal power of the Torah remains protected within Yisrael.

And upon Mordechai was fulfilled "Who guides us upon the heights of our enemies," as the Midrash brings that "and you shall tread upon their heights" (Devarim 33:29) refers to Mordechai, for it is a term of "treading" — since Esther is the last of the miracles permitted to be written.

Mordechai embodies the verse of treading triumphantly upon enemies, and the Megillah of Esther is the final miracle established in writing within Tanach.

The beginning of the Torah is "Bereishis" and the end of the Torah is "you shall tread upon their heights."

From the Torah's first word of "beginning" to its closing words of triumph, the whole Torah spans from reishis to the final victory hinted at in Purim.

In truth, the receiving of the Torah was in the aspect of "from above to below," and on Purim it was "from below to above," as it says, "They confirmed above what they had accepted below."

Sinai was an arousal initiated by Hashem from above; Purim was an awakening rising from Bnei Yisrael's own free will below.

This is the meaning of "they re-accepted it in the days of Achashverosh."

The renewed acceptance was the people's own initiative from below, completing what was begun at Sinai.

In days of hester panim (the hiding of the face).

This willing acceptance came precisely during a time when Hashem's presence was concealed.

And in this, no evil eye can rule.

Because the Purim acceptance was hidden and came from within, it is immune to the ayin hara that afflicts open revelations.

And then there is the wiping out of Amalek.

This inner, concealed strength is precisely what gives the power to erase Amalek.

And it is written, "The Jews had light (orah)" (Esther 8:16).

The victory brought a revelation of light to Bnei Yisrael.

It appears that this refers to Esther, who is the aspect of middas hadin (the attribute of strict justice).

Esther represents din, the channel of judgment through which Hashem's justice was executed.

And she carried out vengeance upon Haman.

Through Esther's agency, the judgment fell upon Haman the wicked.

And "the Jews had light," as it says, "And the Light of Yisrael shall be for a fire" (Yeshayahu 10:17).

The very same din that consumed the wicked appeared to Bnei Yisrael as illuminating light — fire that gives light to the righteous and burns the wicked.

When Bnei Yisrael are meritorious, the "left" becomes "right."

When Bnei Yisrael are worthy, the attribute of din (the "left") is transformed into chesed (the "right") for them.

As explained elsewhere on the verse "from His right hand a fiery law for them" (Devarim 33:2).

Even the fire of din, when received by the worthy, becomes "His right hand" — Torah given with love.

This is the meaning of "Blessed is Esther on my behalf" — for on our behalf it is a blessing, while for the wicked it is a curse.

The same event is simultaneously a berachah for Yisrael and a curse for the resha'im, depending on which side one stands.

This is the hint that "Baruch Mordechai" (blessed is Mordechai) is gematria-equivalent to "Arur Haman" (cursed is Haman).

The numerical equality teaches that the very same force is blessing for the tzaddik and curse for the rasha.

This is to say that these very words and letters that spell "Blessed is Mordechai" are themselves "Cursed is Haman."

One single spiritual reality manifests as blessing or curse depending on the recipient.

For the essence of the blessing to Bnei Yisrael is through the power of their attachment to the "beginning."

Bnei Yisrael's berachah flows from their dveikus to the eternal root, the reishis that has no end.

And in this the sitra achra (the other side) has no grip at all.

The forces of impurity have no hold whatsoever upon that inner, endless root.

As it is written, "Amalek is the first of nations, but its end is everlasting destruction" (Bamidbar 24:20).

Amalek grasped at a false "beginning" for itself, but anything finite must reach a final end.

The explanation: he made a "beginning" for himself, but everything finite has an end.

Amalek's self-made beginning is rooted in finitude, and all finite things are destined to perish.

But Bnei Yisrael, who are attached to the "beginning" that has no limit, have a good end.

Because they cling to the infinite source, their end is good — "better is the end than the beginning."

And it is brought that Amalek hates the side of holiness in every aspect, as stated in the Zohar HaKadosh on Beshalach.

Amalek's enmity toward kedushah is total, attacking from every direction.

And it is in thought, speech, and deed, as explained elsewhere on "who happened upon you (asher karcha)" (Devarim 25:18).

Amalek's assault spans all three planes of avodah — machshavah, dibbur, and ma'aseh.

Therefore we must wipe it out in all of these, as it says "Remember" — with the mouth, "Do not forget" — in the heart, and in deed it was fulfilled on Purim, as it says "remembered and observed" (Esther 9:28).

The mitzvah to erase Amalek operates on all three planes: speech ("Remember"), heart ("Do not forget"), and action (the deeds of Purim).

This is the meaning of "When Moshe raised his hand" (Shemos 17:11).

The verse describing the battle against Amalek hints at all three dimensions of the avodah of erasing him.

"He raised" — in thought.

The lifting up corresponds to elevating one's machshavah.

"Moshe" — in speech, for he is the power of "Moshe, Sar HaTorah" (the prince of the Torah) — the initials spelling Moshe.

Moshe represents the plane of dibbur, the power of Torah-speech that is alluded to in the acronym Mem-Shin-Hei.

"His hand" — in deed.

The hand corresponds to the plane of action.

Then "Yisrael prevailed."

Only when Amalek is fought on all three planes — thought, speech, and deed — does Yisrael truly triumph.

Summary: The Sefas Emes teaches that Esther and Purim flow from hester panim — the hidden, concealed power of Torah that endures eternally within Yisrael and is immune to the ayin hara that broke the open revelation at Sinai. Bnei Yisrael cling to the infinite "reishis," giving them a good end, while Amalek's self-made finite beginning is doomed. The same divine force is blessing for the worthy and curse for the wicked, and Amalek must be erased on all three planes of thought, speech, and deed for Yisrael to prevail.
