The four questions of “Mah Nishtanah” are arranged according to the four sons.
The Sefat Emet teaches that each question corresponds to a different spiritual attitude represented by the four sons of the Haggadah.
For the matzah is a testimony and the commandment that the Blessed One commanded us.
Matzah represents the faithful acceptance of God’s commandments, a symbol of simple testimony untainted by ego.
And the maror is the question of the wicked son, who does not want bitterness.
The maror exposes the rasha’s refusal to confront the bitterness that precedes liberation.
And the response is to blunt his teeth, for on the contrary, all the bitterness that is a remembrance of the bondage is because of him, for from his side there was no redemption at all.
The answer to the rasha is sharp: the suffering remembered in the maror exists because his outlook rejects redemption; he would have remained enslaved.
And the reclining is the question of the simple son—“What is this?”—for it is a change visible in the bodily posture of the person.
Hesebah, an outward physical shift, awakens the tam’s straightforward curiosity about visible change in practice.
And the two dippings are only so that the child will understand to ask, as stated in the Talmud.
The unusual act of double‑dipping is introduced solely to provoke questioning.
And this is for the one who does not know how to ask.
This final device is meant to awaken even the silent child into inquiry.
Summary: Each element of the four questions mirrors one of the four sons, shaping the Seder as a spiritual pedagogy tailored to every type of soul.
