Seeking Hashem's wisdom in creation
Shabbos HaGadol · creation · mitzvos · Divine wisdom · kingship
And it is written: "Great are the works of Hashem, sought out by all who delight in them." (Tehillim 111:2)
The works of creation are great precisely because they invite us to seek them out — to investigate the wisdom Hashem embedded in everything He made.
For in the act of creation there is wisdom without limit.
The natural world is not merely physical matter; it is saturated with infinite Divine wisdom waiting to be uncovered.
And according to a person's ratzon (desire) to contemplate the work of the Creator, may He be blessed, so is the wisdom revealed — and this is found only among Bnei Yisrael.
The hidden wisdom of creation reveals itself in proportion to one's genuine yearning to perceive it, and Bnei Yisrael uniquely carry this capacity to look inward into Hashem's handiwork.
And in truth Shabbos was given for this — to be a day of rest in which to contemplate the work of the Creator, may He be blessed.
The menuchah (rest) of Shabbos is not idleness; its very purpose is to free a person to gaze upon the Divine wisdom within creation.
For upon this was founded the psalm "A song for the day of Shabbos… how great are Your works…" (Tehillim 92).
The Shabbos psalm itself testifies that the day is set aside for marveling at the greatness of Hashem's works.
And beforehand the wonders of the Creator were concealed within nature.
Before the Exodus, Hashem's power was hidden beneath the ordinary surface of the natural order.
And through the wonders of yetzias Mitzrayim (the Exodus), where Hashem changed nature with the ten plagues, the glory of His kingship came forth from potential into actuality.
The miracles of the Exodus tore away nature's mask, making Hashem's hidden sovereignty openly manifest in the world.
And Bnei Yisrael were created for this — to clarify His kingship in the world.
The very purpose of Bnei Yisrael is to reveal Hashem's malchus (kingship) and make it evident throughout creation.
As it is written: "It is upon us to praise… to ascribe greatness to the One who formed creation…" (Aleinu).
Our task, expressed in Aleinu, is to give honor to the Creator and thereby make His greatness known.
And this is the essence of Shabbos, which is called "sahaduta" (testimony), for it is for this that the world was created — as it is written: "Whatever the Holy One created in His world, He created for His honor."
Shabbos bears witness that the world exists to give honor to Hashem; that testimony is the inner meaning of the day.
And it may be that this is the hint in what is expounded on Shabbos HaGadol.
The special teaching of Shabbos HaGadol carries this same theme of testimony to Hashem's kingship.
For when Bnei Yisrael received the first mitzvah on this day — and it is a preparation for all generations — just as the Torah was given on Shabbos, so too they received the mitzvos on Shabbos, and they placed the acceptance of the mitzvos first, in the spirit of what is said: "those who do His word" and only afterward "to hearken to the voice of His word" (Tehillim 103:20).
On Shabbos HaGadol, Bnei Yisrael accepted the first mitzvah, prefiguring naaseh before nishma — committing to action even before fully understanding, which becomes a wellspring for all future generations.
And it is written: "A mitzvah is a candle and the Torah is light." (Mishlei 6:23)
A mitzvah is compared to a candle — the vessel that receives and holds the greater light of Torah.
And the candle is the receptacle for the light; so too the mitzvos refine the 248 limbs to be a prepared vessel for the light of Torah.
Performing mitzvos purifies the whole body, making a person into a fitting vessel ready to receive the illumination of Torah.
And it is true that the mitzvos are the tikkun (rectification) of the realm of action, for there is nothing that does not contain a mitzvah.
Every deed and every object can be elevated through a mitzvah; the mitzvos repair and sanctify the entire physical world of action.
And through the mitzvos Bnei Yisrael know how to seek out the work of creation.
The mitzvos themselves become the lens through which Bnei Yisrael perceive the Divine wisdom hidden in the created world.
As it is written: "sought out by all who delight in them." (Tehillim 111:2)
Returning to the opening verse — those who delight in Hashem's works are the ones able to uncover their hidden wisdom.
And this is the purpose of Shabbos, and it is called Shabbos HaGadol (the Great Shabbos).
This very capacity — to seek out and reveal Hashem's wisdom — is the goal of Shabbos, which earns the name "the Great Shabbos."
And in it is the time to seek out and to clarify the power of the Creator in all that He created.
Shabbos HaGadol is the appointed time to investigate and reveal Hashem's creative power within everything in existence.
Summary: Creation is filled with infinite Divine wisdom that reveals itself to those who yearn to seek it. Shabbos — and especially Shabbos HaGadol, when Bnei Yisrael accepted their first mitzvah — is the appointed time to rest from action and contemplate Hashem's handiwork. The mitzvos refine a person into a vessel for Torah's light, enabling Bnei Yisrael to uncover and bear testimony to Hashem's kingship within all of creation.
