Inner Wisdom Revealed

“In the Midrash: ‘Deep waters…’ and ‘a man of understanding…’”

The Sefat Emet cites a Midrash that contrasts hidden depths with a discerning person capable of drawing them out.

“It has already been written elsewhere that in the heart of a man lies the heart of every person of Israel.”

He teaches that each individual’s inner heart contains a connection to the collective heart of the Jewish people.

“And when the whole structure—the 248 limbs and sinews aligned with the 613 commandments—is repaired, then cord connects to cord and fiber to fiber until his inner essence is revealed.”

When one’s physical and spiritual faculties are aligned with the commandments, an inner harmony forms and the core soul-light can manifest.

“He is called a man of understanding when the insight within him spreads into all his limbs.”

True understanding is not intellectual alone; it permeates one’s entire being and action.

“And this is the rectification of the body.”

Spiritual insight is meant to transform even the physical dimension of a person.

“Then the soul shines.”

Once the body is aligned, the soul’s light becomes revealed naturally.

“And thus it is written: ‘Search for it like hidden treasures,’ meaning that a person must truly believe that in every place and every moment there is a holy spark of power.”

One must approach life with faith that sparks of holiness are present everywhere, awaiting discovery.

“And especially in the human soul.”

The most potent sparks are found within one’s own inner life.

“And one who knows that something is hidden in a place searches until he finds it.”

Awareness of hidden holiness motivates persistent inner searching.

“And if he seeks truly, it is said: ‘Truth shall sprout from the earth.’”

Sincere effort reveals truth, even from the lowest or most concealed places.

“And all this we learn from the story of Judah, even though he had no claim.”

Judah had no legal argument to offer; the truth emerged in another way.

“Only through words that came from the heart was the truth revealed to him.”

The heartfelt approach opened the way for hidden truth to surface.

“And we explained: ‘And he approached him’—meaning he approached his own essence, the aspect of a man of understanding, as above.”

Judah’s act of drawing near symbolizes returning to one’s inner essence, the level of true understanding that reveals truth.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that inner truth is revealed when understanding spreads through one’s whole being, aligning the body with the commandments. Through sincere searching for hidden sparks—especially within oneself—truth emerges, as seen in Judah’s heartfelt approach.
