The eighth day as unifying wellspring
Shemini Atzeres · vessels · wellspring · arousal from below · Sukkos
Regarding the pasuk: "A festival to Hashem for seven days; on the first day a day of rest, and on the eighth day a day of rest."
The Sefas Emes opens with the question of why an "eighth day" is mentioned at all when the Torah already framed the chag as a span of seven days.
For it is difficult: who mentioned an "eighth" — is it not written "seven days"?
The eighth day (Shemini Atzeres) seems to come out of nowhere, since the festival was defined as seven days.
I have written elsewhere about this, that the eighth is the all-encompassing klal (general principle) of the seven days.
The eighth day is not a separate addition; it gathers and unifies all seven days of Sukkos into one inclusive root.
And it will be better understood according to what is said: "seven lamps and seven pipes" (Zechariah 4:2).
He brings the menorah of Zechariah's vision — seven lamps fed through seven channels — as a model for how the seven days receive their light.
And so too it is written in the haftarah: "seven days and seven days."
The doubled "seven days" hints at two parallel sets of seven — one Above and one below.
For the seven days below receive from the seven Above, and there they are a single unity.
The seven days of the chag in this world draw their vitality from seven spiritual sources Above, which at their root are one.
This is like "one above and seven below."
He invokes the image of the menorah (Zechariah 4): one bowl above feeding seven branches below — one source diffusing into seven.
And the "one" pours forth to the seven, for so one would count: "one, and one and one, one and two…" — that the "one" travels together with all seven.
Like the counting in the laws of zavah, the unifying "one" accompanies each of the seven; the singular source remains present within every individual day.
So too the seven days of Sukkos are seven vessels, as it is said, "they will nurse from the abundance (sheva) of the seas" — do not read shefa (abundance) but sheva (seven) — see this in the Midrashim.
Drawing on the pasuk in Devarim 33:19, the seven days become seven keilim (vessels) that draw and hold the heavenly flow.
And likewise the days are like dug pits and cisterns to receive the abundance of the wellspring.
Each day is a hollowed-out vessel — a vessel is made by carving out emptiness — prepared to catch the flow of the spiritual source.
About this it is written: "Drink water from your cistern" (Mishlei 5:15).
During the seven days a person draws from his "cistern" — the stored vessels he has prepared to receive Hashem's bounty.
And on the eighth day it is "flowing waters from within your well" — which is the opening of the wellspring itself.
On Shemini Atzeres the relationship changes: instead of catching flow in vessels, the inner spring itself is opened and water flows freely from within.
And this is unique to Bnei Yisrael alone.
This inner opening of the wellspring is a level reserved exclusively for Bnei Yisrael.
Therefore "it shall be an atzeres (gathering) for you" (Bamidbar 29:35).
"For you" emphasizes that Shemini Atzeres is an intimate, private gathering belonging to Bnei Yisrael alone.
And this comes about through the preparation of the water-libation (nisuch hamayim) during the seven days.
The seven days of pouring water on the mizbe'ach are the preparation that earns the opened wellspring of the eighth day.
As explained above: the meaning of "pour out before Me" is the aspect of "when a woman emits seed first she gives birth to a male" (Berachos 60a).
Just as our arousal from below ("a woman emitting first") draws a higher response, Bnei Yisrael's effort of pouring water over seven days draws forth the masculine, abundant outflow of the eighth day's open spring.
Summary: The "extra" eighth day of Shemini Atzeres is really the unifying klal of the entire chag. Over the seven days of Sukkos, Bnei Yisrael fashion themselves into seven vessels — dug cisterns that catch Hashem's heavenly flow — while Shemini Atzeres is the opening of the wellspring itself, an intimate level reserved for Bnei Yisrael, drawn down precisely because our avodah of arousal from below over the seven days awakens the abundant response from Above.
