Yisro's Humility as Remnant

Yitro · תרל"ב (1871) · Essay 2

“My revered grandfather of blessed memory taught regarding Yitro, based on the verse ‘to the remnant of His inheritance,’ which the Sages expound as referring to one who makes himself like leftovers.”

The Sefat Emet reports a teaching from his grandfather: the phrase “the remnant of His inheritance” is interpreted to mean those who humble themselves and consider themselves as spiritual ‘remnants’ or ‘leftovers,’ a posture of deep humility. This sets the foundation for understanding Yitro’s spiritual character.

“And Yitro regarded himself as leftovers, and because of this he was called ‘Yeter.’”

Yitro’s name reflects his self-perception: he saw himself as insignificant, which is precisely what gave him spiritual merit. His humility is encoded in the very name ‘Yeter,’ meaning surplus or remainder.

“But before he converted, this was not considered a virtue.”

Before Yitro’s conversion, his sense of lowliness did not yet possess spiritual value, because it was not grounded in the service of God.

“For he was in truth extraneous.”

In his pre-conversion state, his being ‘extra’ was literal—detached from holiness and thus truly marginal.

“And only ‘his inheritance’ is written.”

The Torah refers to him in a limited form, indicating that at first he had only a minimal connection to holiness.

“And afterward a vav was added to him, expressing drawing forth.”

Once Yitro converted, the letter vav—symbolizing connection and flow—was added to his name, transforming ‘Yeter’ into ‘Yitro.’ This addition signifies his new role as one who draws down holiness and extends divine influence.

Summary: Yitro’s name reflects a spiritual journey from being truly ‘extra’ to achieving holy humility. Before conversion his lowliness held no value, but afterward it became a channel for divine connection, symbolized by the added vav.
