Tzitzis binds the soul's inner powers

In the passage of tzitzis: "And it shall be for you as tzitzis..." (Bamidbar 15:39).

The Sefas Emes notes the wording "for you," which he will show carries a deeper meaning.

And in the Midrash, "Light is sown for the tzaddik" (Tehillim 97:11) — for the 613 mitzvos are rooted within a person, as is known from the 248 limbs and 365 sinews.

The mitzvos correspond to the very structure of the human being — 248 positive mitzvos to the 248 limbs and 365 prohibitions to the 365 sinews — so the entire Torah is "planted" within man.

Indeed, through the practical mitzvos, which serve as hints, the inner forces of the 613 within a person's soul are awakened; this is the meaning of "and it shall be for you as tzitzis" — "for you" precisely.

The physical mitzvah acts as a remez (allusion) that arouses the corresponding inner spiritual power already latent in the soul; "for you" means the mitzvah works upon your own penimiyus.

Now, the aspect of wrapping oneself in the tallis is the gathering-in of a person's powers to a single place, and the tzitzis are placed on the corners — this binds the entire garment together so that it should not spread out to another place.

Donning the tallis symbolizes collecting one's scattered energies into one focused whole, and the tzitzis at the corners "tie up" the edges so nothing leaks away or disperses.

And this mitzvah likewise brings about a binding-together within the penimiyus (inner self) of the person, as explained above.

Just as the tallis gathers and binds the garment, so the mitzvah of tzitzis gathers and unifies the inner forces of the soul toward Hashem.

Summary: The 613 mitzvos are rooted in the very limbs and sinews of a person, and each physical mitzvah serves as a hint that awakens its corresponding inner spiritual power. Tzitzis — "for you" — gathers and binds together one's scattered energies, both in the garment and within the soul, focusing the whole person toward Hashem.
