Aharon as testimony of Israel's inner holiness
Tetzaveh · Aharon · bigdei kodesh · penimiyus · tefillin
In the Midrash: "And this is the thing which [you shall do to them]..." — "Forever, Hashem, Your word stands firm in the heavens, etc." (Tehillim 119:89)
The Midrash connects the command to consecrate Aharon with the verse that Hashem's word stands eternally established in heaven.
Behold, at the giving of the Torah and the Ten Commandments, the world was poised to become a tikkun for the entire world, so that His conduct, may He be blessed, would be made clear in the world.
Matan Torah was meant to rectify all of creation, making Hashem's hashgachah (guidance) plainly revealed throughout the world.
And Bnei Yisrael were elevated to be like the ministering angels.
At Sinai, Bnei Yisrael rose to the spiritual level of malachim.
As it says, "and you shall be... a kingdom of kohanim, etc." (Shemos 19:6)
The Torah's promise that they would be a "kingdom of priests" reflects this angelic elevation.
And even after the sin [of the Golden Calf], this remained within Bnei Yisrael.
Although the Cheit Ha'eigel diminished the nation, an inner residue of that lofty level stayed alive within them.
And Aharon became the shliach tzibbur (emissary of the congregation) and was sanctified like an angel in heaven.
Aharon HaKohen embodied that surviving holiness, serving as the representative of all Bnei Yisrael and sanctified to an angelic level.
And all of this is by the power of the Torah.
Aharon's elevation, like the nation's, flowed entirely from the power of Torah.
As it says, "the lips of a kohen guard knowledge, and they seek Torah... for he is a messenger (malach) of Hashem of Hosts." (Malachi 2:7)
The navi calls the kohen who teaches Torah a "malach of Hashem," confirming that Torah is what raises him to angelic stature.
For it is written, "and I have placed My words in your mouth, etc." (Yeshayahu 51:16)
Hashem's words placed in the prophet's mouth is the source of this power — the same divine word that "stands firm in the heavens."
And so it was at the giving of the Torah, about which we plead, "let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth." (Shir HaShirim 1:2)
The longing for the "kisses of His mouth" expresses the intimate transmission of Hashem's word at Matan Torah.
"And in the shadow of My hand I have covered you" — this refers to the Clouds of Glory (Ananei Kavod).
The verse's "shadow of My hand" alludes to the protective Clouds of Glory that enveloped Bnei Yisrael, a garment of divine closeness.
And by this power the lower beings were elevated to be like the upper beings in heaven.
Through this divine word and protection, those below were raised to the level of the heavenly realms above.
As it is written, "to plant the heavens... and the earth." (Yeshayahu 51:16)
The same verse speaks of "planting heavens and earth" — joining the upper and lower worlds together.
And so it was fulfilled in Aharon HaKohen, "and I have placed My words," as it says, "and this is the thing, etc."
The divine word placed in the mouth was realized in Aharon — alluded to by the opening "and this is the thing" of the parsha.
And he was clothed in the holy garments (bigdei kodesh), as it says, "and in the shadow of My hand."
Aharon's priestly garments are the concrete form of being "covered in the shadow of His hand" — a holy garment of divine closeness.
And by the power of his avodah in the Mikdash he raised all the lower beings up to heaven.
Through his service in the Bais Hamikdash, Aharon elevated the entire lower world heavenward.
For this was the whole avodah of the korbanos: to draw the lower beings close to the upper.
The very purpose of the korbanos (whose root means "to bring close") was to unite the lower and upper worlds.
And in truth Aharon was a testimony for all of Bnei Yisrael, that the holiness remained in their penimiyus.
Aharon served as living proof that, despite the sin, the inner holiness of every Jew was still intact.
Even though they were not able to actualize it fully in deed after the sin.
The people could no longer fully express that holiness outwardly after the Cheit Ha'eigel.
Nevertheless, this power was within them.
The latent potential for that holiness still lived inside them.
And anything that was part of a general category and then emerged from the category to teach — does not come to teach only about itself, but to teach about the entire category.
Using a klal-uphrat principle of derashah: Aharon "emerged" from the nation not to stand apart but to reveal what is true of the whole nation.
And the power of Aharon HaKohen was as the shlichus (mission/agency) of the entire collective.
Aharon acted as the agent and representative of all Bnei Yisrael, channeling the holiness latent in them all.
As it says in the Midrash, "from him the cornerstone, from him the peg, etc." (cf. Zechariah 10:4)
The Midrash describes such a figure as the "cornerstone" and "peg" from which the whole structure draws — Aharon is that anchor for the nation.
And his very body was sanctified, as it says, "and it shall be upon the heart of Aharon."
Even Aharon's physical body became holy — the Choshen rested "upon his heart."
"The forehead of Aharon."
The Tzitz rested on his forehead — another limb sanctified.
"His shoulders, etc."
The shoulder-stones of the Eifod rested on his shoulders — his whole body was consecrated through the garments.
And through him was fulfilled the love between Yisrael and their Father in Heaven.
Aharon embodied the bond of love between Klal Yisrael and Hashem.
Like the matter that is said, "Set me as a seal upon your heart... upon your arm." (Shir HaShirim 8:6)
The image of a beloved "seal" set on the heart and arm expresses that mutual love — here engraved into the Kohen Gadol's garments.
So too were the names of the tribes upon his heart.
The names of the Shevatim engraved on the Choshen over his heart are the literal fulfillment of "a seal upon your heart."
And upon his shoulders.
The tribal names on the shoulder-stones fulfill "upon your arm" — carrying all of Klal Yisrael with love.
And in truth there is found in every Jew a remembrance of these seals, in the mitzvah of tefillin shel yad and shel rosh, as is brought in the holy Zohar.
Every Jew carries a version of these "seals" of love through the tefillin of the hand and head, as the Zohar teaches.
Only that in the avodah of the Mikdash it was revealed in actual deed.
What every Jew bears inwardly through tefillin was openly manifest in Aharon's avodah in the Bais Hamikdash.
Summary: At Matan Torah Bnei Yisrael rose to an angelic level, and though the Cheit Ha'eigel kept them from fully expressing it, that holiness survived in their penimiyus. Aharon HaKohen — sanctified body and soul through the bigdei kodesh — served as the living testimony and agent of the whole nation, openly manifesting the bond of love between Yisrael and Hashem that every Jew still carries inwardly through tefillin.
