The Power of Retelling Redemption

Pesach · תרל"ט (1878) · Essay 3

Exodus · Geulah · Storytelling · Mashiach · Spiritual Growth

“Whoever increases the telling of the Exodus from Egypt is praiseworthy.”

This teaches that there is no limit to the value of expanding the story of the Exodus.

Truly praiseworthy.

The Sefat Emet emphasizes that this praise is literal and profound.

For the Exodus has no end.

The spiritual impact of the Exodus continues endlessly in every generation.

As it is stated: “If He had not taken us out… we, our children, and our children’s children…”

This demonstrates that the redemption affects all future generations.

So too, and all the more so, the good measure of redemption certainly touches every generation.

The power of divine kindness in the Exodus extends eternally.

As it is written: “I brought you out of Egypt to be your God.”

The goal of redemption is an ongoing relationship with God.

Therefore, to the extent that we awaken the Exodus through telling, we merit drawing Divine kingship upon ourselves, without measure.

The act of recounting the Exodus brings more divine presence into our lives.

And even if we are all wise, etc.

Even the wise gain from repeating the story, because its effect is spiritual, not informational.

Nevertheless, through the telling we are redeemed again from the evil inclination and rise higher.

The Sefat Emet explains that recounting the Exodus creates inner liberation each year.

Until our sages said: to bring the days of the Messiah.

The cumulative spiritual growth from the yearly telling leads toward messianic redemption.

For through the telling of the Exodus each year, knowledge is increased.

Each retelling adds new spiritual understanding to the world.

Until through this merit they will be worthy of the coming of the Messiah, speedily.

The growth of knowledge and faith through the story prepares the world for redemption.

And then the promise “to be your God” will be fulfilled.

The final redemption will complete the divine relationship begun at the Exodus.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that recounting the Exodus is endlessly powerful. Each retelling increases spiritual awareness, draws divine kingship into our lives, liberates us anew, and collectively brings the world closer to the Messianic redemption.
