Avraham, the vessel of chesed

בפסוק ואברהם זקן בא בימים וה' ברך את אברהם בכל.

On the pasuk, "And Avraham was old, advanced in days, and Hashem had blessed Avraham with everything (bakol)." (Bereishis 24:1)

The Sefas Emes will explain how Avraham came to be blessed "with everything."

פי' כל הברכות בעולם באו ע"י אברהם כמ"ש ונברכו בך.

The explanation: all the blessings in the world came through Avraham, as it is written, "and through you shall be blessed [all the families of the earth]." (Bereishis 12:3)

Avraham was made the channel through whom all the world's blessings flow, as Hashem promised that all peoples would be blessed through him.

ממילא קיבל כל הברכות.

Consequently, he himself received all the blessings.

Since every blessing passes through him, Avraham automatically received them all as well.

דכתיב עם חסיד תתחסד.

As it is written, "With the devoted one (chasid) You act devotedly." (Tehillim 18:26)

Hashem deals measure for measure: He bestows chesed upon the chasid who himself is a vessel of chesed.

כי הקב"ה עושה החסדים ע"י החסיד שהוא כלי להשפיע חסדים טובים על ידו.

For the Holy One performs the acts of kindness through the chasid, who is a vessel to bestow good kindnesses by means of him.

Avraham, the embodiment of chesed, became the keili (vessel) through which Hashem channels His kindness to the world.

וז"ש עשה חסד עם אדוני אברהם.

And this is the meaning of "do kindness with my master Avraham." (Bereishis 24:12)

Eliezer's prayer reflects this: kindness done is "with Avraham," for he is the conduit of all chesed.

שע"י יתחסד עם כל העולם.

For through him He acts with kindness toward the whole world.

Any chesed shown to Avraham becomes chesed extended to all the world, since he is its channel.

וכאשר אברהם זקן ותיקן כל שרשו.

And when Avraham grew old and rectified his entire root —

By the end of his life Avraham had perfected his whole spiritual source, fully realizing his middah of chesed.

נעשה זה הכלי חסד לאברהם:

— this vessel of chesed became fully Avraham's own.

Having completed his avodah, Avraham himself became the perfected vessel of chesed, so that "Hashem blessed Avraham with everything" — all blessing now resting in him.

Summary: Avraham was blessed "with everything" because he was made the channel through whom all the world's blessings flow ("through you shall be blessed"). As the embodiment of chesed, he became the vessel through which Hashem bestows kindness on the world ("with the chasid You act devotedly"). When in his old age Avraham perfected his entire root, this vessel of chesed became fully his own — and so he received all blessing.
