Shabbos reveals the hidden inner soul like wine
On the verse, "but My Shabbosos you shall keep... between Me and between you..." (Shemos 31:13).
The Sefas Emes examines Shabbos as a "sign between Me and you," and the command to "keep" it.
Chazal said that Shabbos was given in private (b'tzin'a).
Shabbos was given discreetly, as something hidden — a sign between Hashem and Yisrael alone.
The matter is according to what is written, "the six workdays it shall be closed, and on the day of Shabbos it shall be opened" (Yechezkel 46:1).
During the week the inner "gate" is shut; on Shabbos it opens — Shabbos is when concealed holiness is revealed.
For on Shabbos the hidden penimiyus (inner dimension) is revealed.
Shabbos uncovers the inner reality that lies concealed all week.
And just as it is from His side, so too in the souls of Bnei Yisrael the inner dimension of the heart is opened on the holy Shabbos.
The opening of holiness above is mirrored within: on Shabbos the innermost point of a Jew's heart is revealed.
And everywhere, the penimiyus requires guarding (shemirah).
Anything inner and precious must be protected; the revealed inwardness of Shabbos is no exception.
Therefore it is written "you shall keep (tishmoru)."
The command to "keep" Shabbos reflects the need to guard the inner holiness it reveals.
And Chazal said, "Remember the day of Shabbos" — remember it over wine; the hint is that on it the inner secret is revealed, which is the effect of wine.
We sanctify Shabbos over wine because wine, like Shabbos, brings out what is hidden within — the inner secret.
"And wine (tirosh) makes the maidens flourish/speak" (Zechariah 9:17).
Wine draws out hidden potential, even making the silent speak — a metaphor for revealing the concealed.
And it is brought, "when wine enters, the secret (sod) comes out" (cf. Eruvin 65a).
Wine has the property of bringing hidden secrets to the surface — paralleling Shabbos's revelation of the inner dimension.
And in the sefer Toras Chaim it is written that because Shabbos alludes to the World to Come, therefore we make Kiddush over wine.
Since Shabbos is a foretaste of Olam Haba, we sanctify it over wine, which is connected to the World to Come.
To allude to the wine that is "preserved in its grapes" for the World to Come.
The wine of Kiddush hints at the "preserved wine" set aside since creation for the righteous in the future.
See there in Perek Chelek in Sanhedrin and in the second chapter of Eruvin.
The Sefas Emes points to the Talmudic sources for the "preserved wine."
And the inner meaning of the matter is that the wine preserved in its grapes is itself the power of the neshamah hidden within the body.
The "preserved wine" symbolizes the soul concealed within the body — a hidden treasure awaiting revelation.
And the touch of a stranger cannot affect it, for it is sealed.
Just as wine sealed in the grape cannot be rendered forbidden by a gentile's touch, the innermost soul is sealed and untouchable by impure forces.
And about it is said, "no eye has seen" (Yeshayahu 64:3) — this is the preserved wine.
The hidden soul, like the preserved wine, is the unseen reward "no eye has seen."
And in the future, the tzaddikim sit with their crowns upon their heads — this is the complete revelation of the neshamah.
The future image of the righteous crowned in Gan Eden represents the soul's full and final revelation.
But because Shabbos is a taste of the World to Come, there is on it a small revelation of the neshamah, as Chazal said, an extra soul (neshamah yeseirah) on the holy Shabbos.
Since Shabbos foreshadows Olam Haba, a measure of the soul's future revelation already shines through it — the neshamah yeseirah.
Therefore we make Kiddush over wine, to allude to the revelation of the neshamah, as above.
Kiddush over wine symbolizes the partial unveiling of the hidden soul that occurs on Shabbos.
And therefore wine requires guarding from the touch of a stranger.
Wine's susceptibility to a gentile's touch (yayin nesech) parallels the inner soul-light, which also requires guarding once revealed.
And this itself is what Chazal said: regarding Shabbos "Remember," and regarding Amalek "Remember."
The word "Zachor" appears both for Shabbos and for the command to remember Amalek — a connection the Sefas Emes now explains.
And they also established Purim as a feast of wine.
Purim, the festival of Amalek's downfall, is likewise marked by wine.
For just as one "remembers it over wine" because the penimiyus is revealed.
As with Shabbos, wine on Purim corresponds to the revelation of the inner dimension.
Automatically there is the destruction of Amalek there.
Wherever the inner holiness is revealed, Amalek is automatically eradicated.
For when there is a revelation of the penimiyus, there is the blotting out of Amalek.
Amalek represents concealment and doubt; the revelation of inner holiness is precisely what destroys him.
And on Shabbos the sitra achra (the "other side"/forces of evil) falls into the depths of the abyss.
On Shabbos the forces of impurity collapse and sink away, leaving the inner holiness free to shine.
Therefore there is on it the revelation of the wine.
Because evil withdraws on Shabbos, the "wine" — the inner soul-light — can be revealed.
And according to the distance of the sitra achra, so is the kedushah revealed.
The further the forces of evil are removed, the more holiness comes to light.
And this is what is said in this parsha, when Moshe Rabbeinu requested, "that we be distinguished, I and Your people" (Shemos 33:16), and the Holy One, blessed is He, answered him, "behold, I make a covenant..." (Shemos 34:10).
Moshe asked that Yisrael be set apart and distinct from all nations, and Hashem responded by forging a covenant — tying the request to separation.
And He stipulated with him, "guard yourself... lest you make a covenant with the inhabitant of the land..." (Shemos 34:12).
The condition of the covenant was separation from the surrounding nations — guarding against mingling with them.
For the inner conduct that is special to Bnei Yisrael cannot be revealed except when they are separated from all the nations.
Yisrael's unique inner relationship with Hashem can only emerge when they remain distinct and separate from the nations.
And about this it is written, "a locked garden is my sister" (Shir HaShirim 4:12) — to be set apart and distanced from the nations.
Yisrael is the "locked garden," sealed off and protected from the nations, which is what preserves its inner holiness.
And through this, "a locked spring" (Shir HaShirim 4:12).
Precisely because Yisrael remains a "locked garden," its inner "spring" of holiness stays sealed and pure.
And this was the stumbling — that we fell backward through mingling among the nations.
Our downfall throughout history came from mixing with the nations, which obscured our inner holiness.
And therefore on Shabbos, when Bnei Yisrael are set apart and the sitra achra flees, there is on it the revelation of the special conduct of Bnei Yisrael.
Shabbos itself separates Yisrael and drives off the forces of evil, so it is the time when their unique inner relationship with Hashem is revealed.
And also the power of Moshe Rabbeinu.
Shabbos is also when the special power of Moshe is revealed.
For it is written, "and all the people in whose midst you are shall see the work of Hashem, for it is awesome, that which I do with you" (Shemos 34:10).
Hashem promised that an awesome revelation would be wrought specifically "with you" — with Moshe.
That is, when they merit the revelation of the power of Moshe Rabbeinu — and this is on Shabbos, as Chazal said, that Moshe Rabbeinu returns the crowns to Bnei Yisrael on the holy Shabbos.
The crowns Yisrael received at Sinai and lost at the Golden Calf are restored by Moshe each Shabbos — a weekly revelation of his power and of the inner holiness that the day uncovers.
Summary: Shabbos was "given in private" because it is when the hidden penimiyus is revealed — the inner gate that is closed all week opens, both in the upper worlds and within the Jewish heart. Because inner holiness needs guarding, the Torah commands "you shall keep." Wine, which "brings out the secret," symbolizes this revelation, which is why we sanctify Shabbos over wine; the "preserved wine" of the World to Come is the soul sealed within the body, untouchable by impurity, whose full revelation is the future crowns of the tzaddikim and whose foretaste is the Shabbos neshamah yeseirah. This same revelation of penimiyus automatically blots out Amalek (hence Purim's wine) and drives off the sitra achra. But Yisrael's inner holiness can only be revealed when they stay separate from the nations — a "locked garden" — which is why Hashem's covenant with Moshe demanded separation, and why on Shabbos, when Yisrael are set apart and evil flees, Moshe restores their lost crowns.
