Torah's garment beyond reach of sin

In the Midrash on "Take for Me (an offering)" — "The Torah that Moshe commanded us…" — a talmid chacham who separates from the Torah is not ashamed to return, saying "I am returning to the inheritance of my fathers"; do not read "morashah" (inheritance) but "me'orasah" (betrothed).

The Torah is both an inheritance that always belongs to us and a betrothed bride to whom we are bound; a scholar who strays can always come back to what is rightfully his.

And further in the Midrash: "You ascended on high… even the rebellious, that Hashem may dwell (among them)" (Tehillim 68:19).

When Moshe ascended to receive the Torah, he drew down the ability for even those who have rebelled to once again have Hashem's presence dwell within them.

For earlier it is written, "And he was there… forty days…" and afterward the portion of the donations for the Mishkan is placed next to it, because in the merit of the Torah they merited the Mishkan even after the sin (of the golden calf), as it is taught: a sin extinguishes a mitzvah but does not extinguish Torah.

The Torah's enduring merit is what allowed Bnei Yisrael to build the Mishkan even after the chet ha'egel, for Torah, unlike a single mitzvah, cannot be extinguished by sin.

For the mitzvos serve to rectify the aspect of nefesh, through the 248 (limbs) and 365 (sinews).

The mitzvos work on the level of the nefesh, corresponding to the limbs and sinews of the body that the 248 positive and 365 negative mitzvos repair.

For in the nefesh there is a blemish caused by sin.

Sin damages the nefesh, the lower soul bound to the body.

But the Torah is the aspect of ruach, for through Torah one merits a garment (malbush) that is above the nefesh, and there sin does not blemish.

Torah connects a person to the ruach, a higher level of soul — a spiritual garment that sin cannot reach or damage.

Therefore it is written, "The Torah of Hashem is perfect (temimah)" (Tehillim 19:8) — that this cannot become corrupted.

The Torah is called "perfect" because the level it connects us to is beyond the reach of damage.

Therefore it "restores the nefesh" (Tehillim 19:8), for one can always repair the nefesh through teshuvah, by attaching oneself to the ruach which is above the nefesh, as above.

Teshuvah works by reconnecting the blemished nefesh to the undamaged ruach above it, which is why Torah "restores the soul."

And this is the inner form (tzurah penimis) of a person.

The ruach is the deeper, inner spiritual image of the human being.

Which they merited at the receiving of the Torah.

At Matan Torah, Bnei Yisrael acquired this inner form and the garment of ruach.

And Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, merited this form completely, as it says, "Ascend to Me to the mountain… and be there" (Shemos 24:12).

Moshe attained the inner form in its fullness, becoming wholly bound to the place of Torah on the mountain.

The Zohar HaKadosh explains that he literally became "there" (shem/a name), in the manner of "the Holy One, the Torah, and Yisrael are one" — therefore it was forty days, the measure of the formation of a fetus, for he received a new form.

Moshe's forty days on the mountain mirror the forty days of forming a fetus, because he was being recreated into a new spiritual form, fused with Hashem and the Torah.

And Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, "left the general rule to teach about the whole" — and the whole rule is included.

Moshe is not an exception but a model: what was revealed in him is meant to teach what is latent in all of Yisrael.

And every Jew has a portion in this garment, from the power of Moshe.

Each Jew shares in the spiritual garment of ruach, drawing it from the strength of Moshe Rabbeinu.

This is the meaning of "Tzivah Lanu Moshe" (Moshe commanded us) — the initials spelling "tzelem" (image/form).

The acronym of "Moshe commanded us" spells tzelem, hinting that through Moshe every Jew receives this inner divine form.

But one must rectify oneself in order to merit attaching to this garment through the power of Torah.

The garment is available to all, but each person must do the avodah of self-refinement to cleave to it.

This is the meaning of "I am black yet beautiful" (Shir HaShirim 1:5) — when one returns to clothe oneself in the garment of a pure ruach, as above.

Though "black" from sin on the level of nefesh, Yisrael remains "beautiful" by re-donning the untainted garment of the pure ruach.

Therefore it is taught, "and I am beautiful" — on Shabbos, for on Shabbos Moshe Rabbeinu returns the crowns to Bnei Yisrael.

On Shabbos, the crowns lost at the chet ha'egel are restored through Moshe, and Yisrael is again clothed in beauty.

This is what the Midrash says: from the reward of the "broker" (sarsur, i.e. Moshe) the reward of the Torah becomes known.

Moshe was the intermediary who brought the Torah; from the reward he received we can glimpse the greatness of the Torah's own reward.

As it is written, "And Moshe did not know that the skin of his face shone (karan or)" (Shemos 34:29).

Moshe's radiant face was the visible reward of his absorbing the Torah.

This is that "garment of the sages" (chaluka derabbanan) by which Moshe's face was transformed on the mountain.

The radiance of Moshe's face was the very spiritual garment of ruach that he acquired on the mountain.

And from this he bequeathed to all Bnei Yisrael.

Moshe passed on a share of this luminous garment to every Jew.

Therefore it is written, "According to all that I show you… so shall you do" (Shemos 25:9).

The instruction to build the Mishkan exactly as shown reflects that every Jew can grasp this same inner form.

That all Bnei Yisrael can grasp this form.

The inner tzurah revealed to Moshe is accessible to every member of Klal Yisrael.

Therefore it is written, "She does not fear… from snow" (Mishlei 31:21).

The one clothed in this garment need not fear the "snow" of judgment.

From the judgment of Gehinnom and from the sitra achra (the other side).

The protective garment shields a person from the punishments of Gehinnom and from the forces of impurity.

For "all her household is clothed in shanim (scarlet/two)" (Mishlei 31:21).

The verse's word "shanim" is read as "two," hinting at the two garments of the Jewish soul.

Chazal expounded: "shenayim" (two).

Our Sages read the word not as "scarlet" but as "two."

Which are the two garments that a Jew possesses — including the upper garment that sin does not blemish.

A Jew has two layers: the lower garment of nefesh that sin can stain, and the upper garment of ruach that remains pristine.

Therefore, even though they become like "the tents of Kedar," they can be laundered to become like "the curtains of Shlomo," as Rashi explains there.

Even when Yisrael is blackened like the dark tents of Kedar, they can be cleansed through teshuvah to shine again like the curtains of Shlomo, because the inner garment was never truly soiled.

Summary: The Sefas Emes distinguishes between the mitzvos, which rectify the lower nefesh and can be blemished by sin, and the Torah, which connects a person to the higher ruach — a spiritual garment that sin cannot touch. This is why "a sin extinguishes a mitzvah but not Torah," and why the Mishkan could be built even after the chet ha'egel. Moshe Rabbeinu attained this inner form completely and bequeathed a share of it to every Jew, so that through teshuvah and the power of Torah, Yisrael — though "black" on the surface — can always be cleansed and restored to their original beauty.
