Shabbos and the three pillars of emunah
Shabbos · emunah · three meals · Mattan Torah · Bnei Yisrael as witnesses
In the parsha: "Remember the day of Shabbos to sanctify it," and Chazal said that this "remembering" is with the mouth — for added kedushah comes through the remembrance (zechirah) of Bnei Yisrael.
The mitzvah of "zachor" (remember the Shabbos) is fulfilled verbally, and Chazal teach that Bnei Yisrael's act of remembering actually adds holiness to the day.
And the matter is that there are three aspects in Shabbos.
Shabbos contains three distinct dimensions, which the Sfas Emes will now lay out.
And these are the fundamentals of emunah (faith).
These three aspects correspond to the three pillars of our emunah.
As is written in the sefarim: faith in the creation of the world.
The first is emunah that Hashem created the world.
And His hashgachah (providence), may He be blessed, at every moment.
The second is emunah in Hashem's ongoing providence, guiding the world at all times.
And the future geulah, when "Hashem and His Name will be one."
The third is emunah in the future redemption, when Hashem's oneness will be fully revealed.
And Shabbos testifies to all three.
Shabbos bears witness to all three of these foundations of faith at once.
And therefore there are three "meals of faith" (seudasi d'mehimnusa) corresponding to the three above-mentioned beliefs.
This is why we eat three Shabbos meals — each one a "meal of faith" aligned with one of the three pillars of emunah.
On Shabbos night, testimony to the Creation — "Shabbos of Bereishis" (the Shabbos of the world's origin).
The Friday-night meal testifies to the creation of the world, the original Shabbos of Bereishis.
And on Shabbos day, the giving of the Torah — this is the aspect of His hashgachah, may His Name be blessed, that He conducts the world, beyond having created it from nothing to something.
The daytime meal corresponds to Mattan Torah, which expresses Hashem's providence: He does not merely create the world from nothing but actively governs it.
And this "order" (of governance) was given to Bnei Yisrael.
This very system of Divine governance was entrusted to Bnei Yisrael.
And this is the receiving of the Torah.
That entrustment is precisely Kabbalas HaTorah.
For this is the meaning of the Aseres HaDibros (Ten Commandments).
The Ten Commandments embody this transmission of Hashem's governance to His people.
"He tells His words to Yaakov" (Tehillim 147:19).
The pasuk that Hashem "tells His words to Yaakov" expresses this giving over of His ways to Klal Yisrael.
That He handed over His hanhagah (conduct of the world) to Bnei Yisrael.
Hashem transmitted the very governance of the world to Bnei Yisrael.
And therefore He gave us 613 mitzvos in the Torah, to do everything according to His will (ratzon) — and the rest of the world did not merit this.
The 613 mitzvos enable Bnei Yisrael to align all their actions with ratzon Hashem, a privilege not granted to the nations of the world.
Only Bnei Yisrael, through the receiving of the Torah.
This unique closeness came to Bnei Yisrael alone, through Kabbalas HaTorah.
For in the order of governance, not all creatures are equal, and according to the merit of the creature, so does the Holy One, Blessed is He, conduct him.
Hashem's governance is calibrated to each creature's worthiness — the more refined the creature, the more direct His guidance.
There is governance through angels and messengers and causes, near and far.
Some are governed only indirectly, through layers of angels, agents, and natural causes that conceal Hashem.
Therefore it is written: "Hear, My people, and I will speak."
The pasuk's condition "Hear, and I will speak" shows that the directness of Hashem's address depends on us.
For His speech and conduct are revealed only according to how much those below look forward to being drawn after His governance, may He be blessed.
The measure of Hashem's revealed guidance corresponds to how much we below yearn for it and make ourselves receptive to following His ways.
And this is the meaning of "I am Hashem your God (Elokecha)," as is written in the Midrash: "I am God over all who come into the world, but upon you I have set My Name especially" — see there.
The phrase "your God" hints, per the Midrash, that while Hashem rules everyone, He attaches His Name to Bnei Yisrael in a unique, more intimate way.
And this is the meaning of "You are My witnesses, says Hashem."
This special relationship is what makes Bnei Yisrael Hashem's "witnesses."
Meaning: this very fact that the word of Hashem was revealed in the world, as it is written "And God spoke," etc.
The very revelation of Hashem's word in the world — "And God spoke all these words" — is the substance of their testimony.
Came about through the power of Bnei Yisrael.
That revelation was made possible specifically through Bnei Yisrael's receptivity.
This is the testimony of Bnei Yisrael, as has been said many times: that the testimony of Bnei Yisrael is not with the mouth alone.
Their testimony is not merely a spoken declaration.
Rather, they are witnesses in their very essence.
Bnei Yisrael are living witnesses by their very being, not just by what they say.
As it is written: "You are My witnesses, says Hashem."
This is the deeper sense of "You are My witnesses."
For Bnei Yisrael merited to receive the Torah.
Their very meriting to receive the Torah is itself the testimony.
And His speech, may His Name be blessed, and His governance.
They received Hashem's word and the system of His governance.
If so, the truth testifies to itself, as it is written: "The Torah and Yisrael are entirely one."
Since Bnei Yisrael have become one with the Torah, the truth bears witness to itself through them — Oraysa v'Yisrael kulhu chad.
And this is "You are My witnesses, says Hashem."
This identity of Yisrael with the Torah is the essence of "You are My witnesses."
And so Chazal said on the pasuk "as often as I speak of him (midei dabri bo)" — "di dibri," enough of My speech that I have placed within him.
Chazal read "midei dabri bo" as "di dibri" — "the sufficiency of My speech that I placed within him" — meaning Hashem's word has been implanted within Bnei Yisrael themselves.
And this portion depends on the power of Bnei Yisrael, on the day of Shabbos.
This dimension of testimony — the hashgachah aspect of Shabbos — is drawn down through Bnei Yisrael specifically on Shabbos day.
Therefore Chazal said: the Torah was given on Shabbos.
This is why Chazal teach that Mattan Torah took place on Shabbos.
"Remember" — in the very substance of the day.
The mitzvah of "zachor" relates to the daytime essence of Shabbos, the time of Mattan Torah.
Therefore there is the reading of the Torah on Shabbos.
This is why we read from the Torah on Shabbos day — re-enacting Mattan Torah.
And the third meal is the Shabbos that hints at "the day that is entirely Shabbos," when Hashem will be one in the mouth of all.
Seudah Shlishis corresponds to the third pillar — the future, when the whole world will be "entirely Shabbos" and Hashem's oneness recognized by all.
As it is written: "And the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem, as the waters cover the sea."
The pasuk in Yeshayahu describes that messianic state when knowledge of Hashem will fill the entire world.
Summary: Shabbos testifies to the three fundamentals of emunah — creation, ongoing Divine providence, and the future redemption — which correspond to the three Shabbos meals (Friday night for Creation, daytime for Mattan Torah and hashgachah, Seudah Shlishis for the future geulah). Through Kabbalas HaTorah and the 613 mitzvos, Hashem entrusted His governance to Bnei Yisrael, who become His living "witnesses" — for Oraysa v'Yisrael are entirely one. The daytime "zachor" of Shabbos draws down this dimension, while the third meal points toward "the day that is entirely Shabbos," when Hashem's oneness will fill all the world.
