Shabbos peace as the erasing of Amalek

Zachor · תרמ"ט (1888) · Essay 1Share

Zachor · Amalek · Shabbos · shalom · tzedakah

It is taught in the Midrash: regarding Shabbos it is written "Remember" (zachor), and regarding Amalek it is written "Remember" (zachor) — Shabbos over a full table, and Amalek over an empty table.

The same word "zachor" governs both Shabbos and the war with Amalek, and the Midrash links them — but in opposite settings, one of fullness and one of emptiness.

The matter is that the remembering of Shabbos is itself the blotting out of Amalek, for Shabbos is shalom (peace).

The two "remembrances" are really one act: by keeping Shabbos, which embodies peace and wholeness, one is already erasing Amalek.

And of Amalek it is written: "Hashem has a war with Amalek" (Shemos 17:16).

Amalek is the very principle of milchamah (war and strife), the polar opposite of Shabbos's peace.

For Shabbos is a foretaste of the World to Come, a hint of "the day that is wholly Shabbos."

Shabbos carries within it a glimmer of olam haba, the era of perfect peace toward which all of history is moving.

And then Amalek will have no remembrance at all in the world.

In that final state of complete peace, Amalek — the force of strife — will be utterly gone.

And see what was written on Parshas Vayeishev, that Yaakov is the aspect of emes (truth).

The Sefas Emes recalls his framework: each of these figures embodies a fundamental middah, and Yaakov stands for truth.

And Yosef is shalom (peace).

Yosef embodies the attribute of peace and harmony.

And Esav is sheker (falsehood).

Esav represents the principle of falsehood, the opposite of Yaakov's truth.

And Amalek is milchamah (war) and machlokes (strife).

Amalek, descended from Esav, embodies conflict — the opposite of Yosef's peace.

And we wrote there, based on the Midrash on Bereishis: Emes said, "Let this world not be created, for it is full of falsehood," and Shalom said, "Let it not be created, for it is full of strife."

At creation, the attributes of Truth and Peace both objected — this world by nature is riddled with falsehood and conflict, the very domains of Esav and Amalek.

However, to Bnei Yisrael was given truth and peace even in this world.

Despite this world's nature, Bnei Yisrael were granted access to emes and shalom right here, overcoming the objections of those attributes.

The Torah and the Shabbos.

Torah is the gift of truth, and Shabbos is the gift of peace — the two channels through which these higher middos enter this world.

Because they are children of the World to Come.

Bnei Yisrael belong essentially to olam haba, and so they can draw its qualities of truth and peace down into olam hazeh.

And this is testimony concerning Bnei Yisrael, that they can attain these middos in the world, that they are prepared for the World to Come.

The very fact that Bnei Yisrael can grasp truth and peace in this world is proof of their fitness for the World to Come.

But Esav and Amalek, whose essence is only this world —

Esav and Amalek are rooted entirely in olam hazeh, with no portion in the World to Come.

Therefore they are falsehood and war.

Being bound wholly to this transient world, their nature is falsehood and strife, with no access to the eternal truth and peace.

And there in the Midrash: Chesed said, "Let it be created, for he performs acts of kindness," and Tzedek said, "Let it be created, for he does acts of righteousness."

Against Truth and Peace, who objected, the attributes of Kindness and Righteousness argued in favor of creation, because man would perform chesed and tzedakah.

And it appears that through the power of chesed one merits truth in this world, as it is written: "Kindness and truth have met" (Tehillim 85:11).

Chesed is the bridge: by acts of kindness one earns the truth that Truth itself doubted could exist here — "chesed and emes have met."

And through the power of tzedakah one merits peace in this world: "Righteousness and peace have kissed" (Tehillim 85:11).

Likewise tzedakah is the bridge to peace — the act of righteousness draws down the shalom that Peace doubted could survive here.

And so it is said: "Whoever increases tzedakah increases peace" (Avos 2:7).

The Mishnah confirms the link: giving more tzedakah brings more shalom into the world.

And therefore [Parshas] Zachor comes after [Parshas] Shekalim, for after tzedakah one merits peace.

The order of the special parshiyos teaches this: Shekalim (the giving of tzedakah) precedes Zachor, because peace — and thereby the erasing of Amalek — comes through the merit of tzedakah.

And this is so for Bnei Yisrael, who give tzedakah for the sake of Heaven, and concerning whom it is said: "Tzedakah exalts a nation" (Mishlei 14:34).

When tzedakah is given l'shem Shomayim, it elevates the people who give it.

But concerning the resha'im, "the kindness of the nations is a sin" (Mishlei 14:34).

When the wicked do "kindness," it is not for Heaven's sake, and so it counts against them as sin.

And according to what we said, the hint is: although chesed is higher than tzedakah — for through it one can reach emes, which is higher than shalom —

Chesed leads to truth (the loftier attribute), while tzedakah leads to peace; so chesed ranks above tzedakah in this hierarchy.

nevertheless, regarding the resha'im, even their chesed is a sin.

Despite chesed being the higher path, in the hands of the wicked even their kindness becomes sin, because it lacks the right intent.

But Bnei Yisrael, even through tzedakah [the lower path], are elevated.

The contrast is striking: the wicked are diminished even by the higher chesed, while Bnei Yisrael are exalted even by the lower tzedakah, because their hearts are turned to Heaven.

And the Shabbos is shalom.

Returning to the opening theme: Shabbos is the embodiment of peace.

And because there shines within it an illumination resembling the World to Come, therefore it possesses wholeness (shleimus).

Shabbos's peace flows from the glimmer of olam haba within it; that foretaste of perfection gives Shabbos its completeness.

And to whatever extent peace is found in the world, the remembrance of Amalek is destroyed thereby.

Every increase of shalom directly diminishes Amalek, since Amalek is the principle of strife — peace and Amalek cannot coexist.

And Chazal hinted: "Remember… the Shabbos" — guard it from the one who comes to make it forgotten, and that is Amalek.

The double "zachor" is intentional: remembering Shabbos and remembering to wipe out Amalek are two sides of one mitzvah, for Amalek is precisely the force that seeks to make Shabbos and holiness forgotten.

And behold, it is a positive mitzvah to remember the hatred of Amalek.

The Torah obligates us to actively keep alive our enmity toward Amalek.

For he obstructs the revelation of His Name in the world.

The reason for this enmity is that Amalek is the very obstacle to Hashem's glory becoming revealed.

And all the stumbling-blocks that have come upon Bnei Yisrael, collectively and individually —

Every spiritual obstacle Bnei Yisrael have faced, whether as a nation or as individuals, traces back to a single source.

they all come from the power of that rasha.

Amalek is the root power behind all such stumbling and obstruction.

As it is written: "who happened upon you on the way" (Devarim 25:18).

The word "korcha" (chanced upon you) hints at the way Amalek introduces "mikreh" — coincidence, doubt, and coldness — into the path of Bnei Yisrael, causing them to stumble.

And when his remembrance is destroyed from the world, the sins will cease.

Once Amalek — the source of stumbling — is gone, the sins and failings of Bnei Yisrael will come to an end, since their root cause is removed.

And one may thus explain the pasuk in the haftarah, where Shmuel said: "And you shall utterly destroy… the sinners, Amalek" (cf. Shmuel I 15:18).

The Sefas Emes brings the haftarah of Zachor as support, reading the unusual phrasing in light of this idea.

And there is a difficulty: a twofold one. It should have said "chot'im" (sinners).

Two grammatical problems: the verse uses "chata'im" (sins) rather than the expected "chot'im" (sinners).

And furthermore: are Amalek merely "sinners"? They are rebels and traitors!

The second difficulty: "sinners" seems too mild a term for Amalek, who are deliberate rebels against Hashem.

But it is fitting to explain that [Shmuel] hinted to him: through the destruction of those resha'im, the sins, inadvertent transgressions, and stumbling-blocks of Bnei Yisrael will cease.

The phrase "the sins, Amalek" means: destroy Amalek, who is the source of the sins of Bnei Yisrael. Wiping out Amalek removes the very root of Yisrael's sins and stumbling.

Summary: The single word "zachor" binds Shabbos and Amalek, for keeping Shabbos — which is shalom and a foretaste of olam haba — is itself the erasing of Amalek, who embodies war and strife. Yaakov, Yosef, Esav, and Amalek personify truth, peace, falsehood, and conflict; though Truth and Peace objected to this world's creation, Bnei Yisrael draw truth and peace into it through chesed and tzedakah, which is why Zachor follows Shekalim. Amalek is the root of every stumbling-block of Bnei Yisrael, the one who chills and obstructs the revelation of Hashem's Name; thus "destroy the sinners, Amalek" means that with Amalek's destruction the very sins of Bnei Yisrael will cease.
