Shabbos testimony blots out Amalek

איתא נשבע הקב"ה שאין שמו שלם וכסאו שלם עד שימחה שמו של עמלק.

It is taught that Hashem swore that His Name is not complete and His throne is not complete until the name of Amalek is blotted out.

Chazal teach that there is a fundamental incompleteness in the revelation of Hashem's Name and kingship in the world so long as Amalek endures; the full completeness awaits Amalek's erasure.

דכתיב מלחמה לה' בעמלק מדור דור.

As it is written, "There is a war for Hashem against Amalek from generation to generation" (Shemos 17:16).

This battle is not a one-time event but an ongoing war "for Hashem" that recurs in every generation.

דכתיב זה שמי כו' וזה זכרי לדור דור.

As it is written, "This is My Name... and this is My remembrance for every generation" (Shemos 3:15).

The Sefas Emes links the "generation to generation" of the war against Amalek to the "generation to generation" of Hashem's Name and remembrance — the two are bound together.

דרשו חז"ל שמי עם י"ה שס"ה זכרי עם ו"ה רמ"ח.

Chazal expounded: "My Name (shemi)" together with the letters Yud-Heh equals 365; "My remembrance (zichri)" together with the letters Vav-Heh equals 248.

By gematria, Hashem's Name as expressed through "shemi" with Yud-Heh corresponds to the 365 prohibitions, and "zichri" with Vav-Heh corresponds to the 248 positive mitzvos — hinting that the Divine Name is revealed precisely through the mitzvos.

והיינו שע"י המצות שניתן לבנ"י מתגדל שמו ית' בעולם.

That is to say, through the mitzvos given to Bnei Yisrael, His Name, may He be blessed, is magnified in the world.

The 248 and 365 mitzvos are the very means by which Hashem's Name is made great and revealed in the world.

ויש בכל דור התגלות מיוחד משמו ית'.

And in every generation there is a particular revelation of His Name, may He be blessed.

Each generation has its own unique disclosure of the Divine Name, a fresh facet of Hashem's presence meant to be revealed in that era.

כי זה השם כולל עבר והוה ועתיד נמצא השי"ת בזה השם נותן קיום לכל הדורות.

For this Name encompasses past, present, and future; thus Hashem, through this Name, grants existence and sustenance to all the generations.

The four-letter Name spans "was, is, and will be," and through it Hashem continually bestows existence upon every generation across all of time.

ובנ"י נבראו לברר זאת שהכל מתנהג בשמו יתברך.

And Bnei Yisrael were created to make this clear — that everything is conducted through His Name, may He be blessed.

The very purpose of Bnei Yisrael is to reveal and clarify that all of existence is governed by, and dependent upon, Hashem's Name.

והוא בכח התורה ומצות.

And this is accomplished through the power of Torah and mitzvos.

The instrument by which Bnei Yisrael reveal Hashem's governance of the world is the keeping of Torah and mitzvos.

ועמלק הרשע הוא מתנגד לכל אלה התקונים שבנ"י מתקנים בעולם.

And the wicked Amalek opposes all these tikkunim (rectifications) that Bnei Yisrael bring about in the world.

Amalek stands as the adversary of the entire project of revealing Hashem in the world; he sets himself against every rectification that Bnei Yisrael accomplish.

ויש בכל דור מלחמה מיוחדת עמו.

And in every generation there is a particular battle with him.

Just as each generation has its own revelation of the Name, so it has its own corresponding battle against the Amalek who seeks to conceal that revelation.

ובשבת שנק' סהדותא שבנ"י מעידין על השי"ת בשבת.

And on Shabbos, which is called "sahaduta" (testimony), for Bnei Yisrael bear witness about Hashem on Shabbos —

Shabbos is termed "testimony" because by resting we testify that Hashem created the world and governs it; our Shabbos is a public attestation to His sovereignty.

לכן השבת מסייע למחות שם עמלק שהוא כופר בזה העדות יותר מכל הרשעים:

Therefore Shabbos assists in blotting out the name of Amalek, who denies this very testimony more than all other evildoers.

Because Amalek's essence is the denial of Hashem's providence — the very thing Shabbos testifies to — Shabbos has a special power to help erase Amalek, who is the arch-denier of that testimony.

Summary: Hashem's Name and throne remain incomplete until Amalek is erased. The Divine Name, encompassing past, present and future, is magnified through the 248 and 365 mitzvos given to Bnei Yisrael, and each generation has its own revelation of the Name and its own battle against Amalek, who opposes every tikkun. Shabbos — Bnei Yisrael's "testimony" to Hashem's sovereignty — is therefore uniquely empowered to blot out Amalek, the arch-denier of that very testimony.
