Refining the hidden Torah within creation

In the Midrash on "And you shall bring the Omer."
The Sefas Emes opens with the Midrash on the mitzvah of bringing the Omer offering of new barley.
"What advantage has a man in all his toil?" — they wished to suppress the book of Koheles. One might think this includes even the toil of Torah; therefore the verse says "in his toil" (and not the toil of Torah).
Chazal nearly hid away Koheles because its opening — "what gain is there in all of man's toil?" — could be read to dismiss even the labor of Torah. They concluded the verse refers only to ordinary worldly toil, not to amal haTorah.
And the initial assumption is hard to understand, for the main thrust of Koheles is to declare all the affairs of this world vain, leaving only the engagement in Torah and mitzvos.
It is puzzling that anyone would have thought Koheles dismisses Torah, since the whole book is precisely about the emptiness of worldly pursuits and the value of Torah and mitzvos.
However, it appears that in truth, all that Hashem created He created for His honor, and "Hashem founded the earth with wisdom."
In fact, the entire world was created for Hashem's glory and is built upon Divine wisdom — so it cannot be utterly worthless.
Therefore there is "advantage" (yisron) in all the work of creation.
Because Divine wisdom underlies everything, there is genuine value hidden within all of creation, not only in Torah study.
This excludes the view of the heretics who say, "Hashem has forsaken the earth."
This affirmation refutes those who claim Hashem abandoned the physical world to mere chance, devoid of Divine purpose.
However, one cannot find the wisdom concealed in the work of creation except through the power of Torah, as it is written, "Bereishis bara" — for the sake of the Torah, which is called "reishis"; and through the toil of Torah one is able to raise up this "reishis" found within nature.
The hidden wisdom in creation can only be uncovered through Torah. Since the world was created "for the sake of Torah" (called reishis), it is the toil of Torah that extracts and elevates the Divine "first principle" buried within nature.
And this is called "the toil of Torah" — to labor to find words of Torah in every place.
Amal haTorah means more than study; it is the effort to discover the Torah-content concealed within every aspect of the world.
For a Jew must believe that everything is Torah, and the power of the ten utterances is concealed within nature, as it is written, "the words of Hashem are pure, refined silver."
Emunah demands recognizing that all reality is ultimately Torah — the ten creative utterances lie hidden within nature, like pure silver waiting to be refined (Tehillim 12:7).
The meaning: just as silver is found within the earth and must be smelted and refined until it becomes pure silver.
Just as raw silver lies embedded in ore and must be purified, the Torah-essence within nature must be extracted and refined through effort.
So too, words of Torah lie concealed within all of creation.
Every part of the created world contains hidden Torah, awaiting the one who will labor to reveal it.
And concerning this it is written, "and search for it as for hidden treasures."
The verse (Mishlei 2:4) calls for seeking wisdom like buried treasure, since it is concealed and must be actively sought out.
And in truth this is an aspect of geulah and freedom — to bring forth the precious from the worthless.
Extracting the holy wisdom hidden within the coarse physical world is itself a form of redemption, liberating the precious spark trapped within the lowly.
Now, Bnei Yisrael are the vessels for this.
Bnei Yisrael are the instruments through which this refinement and redemption of creation is accomplished.
And when they left Mitzrayim, this refinement was accomplished through them for the world at large, until the ten utterances were clarified and from them the Ten Commandments were formed.
The Exodus initiated this cosmic refinement: the ten hidden utterances of creation were "purified" and elevated into the revealed Ten Commandments given at Sinai.
And not only that, but every single year, from the day after Pesach, the portion of "reishis" is elevated through the power of the redemption from Mitzrayim.
This refinement is renewed annually: beginning the day after Pesach, the redemptive power of the Exodus once again raises up the hidden "first" portion within creation.
Therefore, "And you shall bring… the Omer, the first (reishis)…"
This is why the Omer brought after Pesach is called "reishis" — it represents the elevation of that "first" Divine portion within the physical produce.
And this "reishis" is refined over the forty-nine days until it actually becomes Torah.
During the forty-nine days of Sefiras HaOmer, this "first" portion undergoes gradual refinement until, at Shavuos, it is transformed into actual Torah.
Just as it was then at the Exodus, on a collective scale.
This mirrors the original process from the Exodus to Sinai, now reenacted each year in the counting of the Omer.
Concerning this it is said, "I am… who took you out," and understand this well.
The first commandment ties the giving of Torah ("Anochi") directly to the Exodus, showing that the redemption was for the sake of receiving Torah.
So too each year there is a particular advancement, until in the future "the earth will be filled with knowledge," when everything will literally become Torah — and all of this is through Bnei Yisrael; therefore they are called "those who do His word," and as it is taught, the tzaddikim sustain the world that was created with ten utterances, as explained elsewhere.
Each year adds its own measure to this refinement, progressing toward the future when the whole world will be filled with knowledge of Hashem and all will be revealed as Torah. Bnei Yisrael accomplish this, which is why they are "doers of His word," and the tzaddikim uphold the world that was formed through the ten utterances.
Summary: The Sefas Emes explains that all of creation contains hidden Divine wisdom — the ten creative utterances concealed within nature like silver buried in ore. The true "toil of Torah" (amal haTorah) is the labor of uncovering and refining this hidden Torah in every place, a form of geulah that brings forth the precious from the worthless. Bnei Yisrael are the vessels for this refinement: it began at the Exodus, when the ten utterances were elevated into the Ten Commandments, and it is renewed each year from the Omer ("reishis") through the forty-nine days until Shavuos, advancing toward the future when the whole world will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem and revealed entirely as Torah.
