Holiness revealed through separation

In the Midrash: "And You are exalted (marom) forever, Hashem" (Tehillim 92:9) — Your hand is always the upper one, both in the attribute of retribution [and in the attribute of goodness].

The Midrash on the Shabbos psalm teaches that Hashem's "hand" always prevails — His mastery is supreme whether He acts with kindness or with justice.

"You conduct exaltedness (romemus) in Your world."

Hashem governs His world from a place of utter loftiness and transcendence.

For HaKadosh Baruch Hu is holy and exalted above all the heavenly hosts.

Hashem is utterly holy and elevated, beyond even the highest angels.

And He chose for Himself Bnei Yisrael to be drawn after His conduct.

Hashem chose Bnei Yisrael to follow and align themselves with His exalted mode of conduct.

And just as He is holy and separate (nivdal) from all, on high, so too the conduct of Bnei Yisrael must be holy and separate from all the lower [beings].

Just as Hashem is holy through being set apart, Bnei Yisrael's kedushah is achieved by being distinct and separate from the surrounding lower world — "kedoshim tihyu" through havdalah.

[And concerning this it is written, "like a rose among the thorns" (Shir HaShirim 2:2)… "like an apple among the trees of the forest" (Shir HaShirim 2:3).]

Bnei Yisrael are compared to a rose among thorns and an apple among forest trees — set apart and distinguished from their surroundings.

And His conduct is in a hidden and concealed manner, for holiness cannot be revealed in this world, which is distant and coarse (megusham).

Hashem's governance is largely concealed, because the coarse, distant nature of olam hazeh cannot ordinarily contain open holiness.

However, there are special times and places in which holiness is revealed in the world.

Despite the general concealment, there are designated times (like Shabbos) and places (like the Mikdash) where kedushah does break through.

And those who believe in Him must always be ready to take shelter in His shadow, and then they merit the illumination of holiness even in this world.

The ma'aminim must constantly stand ready to take refuge under Hashem's protection; through such emunah they can receive the light of kedushah even in this lowly world.

Therefore HaKadosh Baruch Hu commanded Bnei Yisrael to be holy and separate from the nations, and according to their holiness, so can His holiness be revealed in the world.

The mitzvah to be holy and set apart is the mechanism by which Hashem's own holiness becomes manifest in the world — the more Bnei Yisrael sanctify themselves, the more divine holiness shines through.

And this is what the Toras Kohanim says: if you are holy, I consider it for you as though you sanctified Me.

When Bnei Yisrael make themselves holy, Hashem regards it as if they sanctified Him — because their kedushah reveals His.

The explanation is similar to what the Zohar HaKadosh explains on the verse "Corruption is His? No — the blemish is His children's" (Devarim 32:5) — the wicked cause a defect [above].

As the Zohar teaches, human deeds have cosmic effect: the wicked cause a "blemish," and by contrast the righteous reveal Hashem's holiness.

Meaning, that the revelation of His holiness in this world depends on the avodah of man.

Whether Hashem's holiness is revealed or concealed in our world hinges on human avodah.

And nevertheless, "Hashem's portion is His people" (Devarim 32:9), and they have an [eternal] attachment (deveikus) to their root above, in HaKadosh Baruch Hu, forever.

Regardless of behavior, Bnei Yisrael always retain a permanent bond to their divine root — they are Hashem's eternal portion.

But if they merit, the power of the root is revealed below as well.

The connection is always present at the root; through merit, that hidden power becomes revealed and active in the lower world too.

And upon this the entire psalm "for the day of Shabbos" (Tehillim 92) is founded.

This dynamic of concealment and revelation is the theme of the Shabbos psalm "Mizmor shir l'yom haShabbos."

"To tell of Your kindness in the morning and Your faithfulness in the nights" (Tehillim 92:3).

The verse pairs morning (revealed chesed) with night (concealed faith) — the two modes of relating to Hashem.

For it is written, "He rolls light away before darkness" — therefore, when holiness does not shine in the world, Bnei Yisrael must believe in Him until the morning comes.

During the "night" of concealment, when holiness is hidden, the avodah is emunah — to trust steadfastly in Hashem until the "morning" of revelation arrives.

And so it is with the holiness revealed on Shabbos: it is a sign and testimony about HaKadosh Baruch Hu, even for all the weekdays.

The holiness that shines openly on Shabbos serves as proof and testimony of Hashem's presence — a testimony that extends over the concealed weekdays too.

Therefore, when Shabbos arrives and holiness shines, "it is good to give thanks [to Hashem]" (Tehillim 92:2).

When Shabbos comes and kedushah is revealed, it is the fitting time to give thanks — as the psalm opens.

And this is the difference regarding the wicked: their entire root has a defined limit (ketzvah), and therefore when they fall, they fall together with their root.

Unlike Bnei Yisrael, whose root is eternal, the wicked have only a finite root; so when they decline, their very root collapses with them — there is no enduring connection to preserve them.

And this is, "when the wicked flourish… it is so that they be destroyed forever (adei ad)" (Tehillim 92:8).

The temporary flourishing of the wicked is itself the prelude to their total and permanent destruction.

And this is "Your enemies, Hashem" (Tehillim 92:10) — referring above, to the accusers against Bnei Yisrael, who are from the "left side" (sitra di-semala).

"Your enemies" are the heavenly accusing forces, the prosecuting powers from the side of severity that oppose Bnei Yisrael.

"Your enemies shall perish" — [referring to] those below who cleave to them.

The earthly wicked who attach themselves to those accusing forces will perish along with them.

As is explained regarding "the horse and its rider He cast [into the sea]" (Shemos 15:1).

This pairing of the upper force and its lower adherents is like the "horse and rider" cast into the sea — the heavenly power and its earthly agent fall together.

"And You are exalted forever" — that even in the time of galus and darkness, HaKadosh Baruch Hu, on high, guards the portion of Bnei Yisrael.

Even during exile and concealment, Hashem remains exalted and watches over Bnei Yisrael's eternal portion from above.

And on the contrary, it is a kindness (chesed) that the light is not revealed at the time when darkness rules — "He rolls light away before darkness."

It is actually a mercy that holiness stays hidden while darkness dominates, protecting the light from being defiled by the prevailing impurity.

And the darkness intensifies until its end, and then they [the wicked] perish and are scattered.

The darkness is allowed to build to its full extent, and at that climax the forces of evil disintegrate and are destroyed.

And afterward, "You have raised my horn like that of a wild ox" (Tehillim 92:11).

Once the darkness collapses, the strength ("horn") of Bnei Yisrael is exalted.

And it is written, "How abundant is Your goodness that You have hidden away (tzafanta)" (Tehillim 31:20) — this is the portion of the root, concerning which it is said, "He stores away (yitzpon) sound wisdom for the upright" (Mishlei 2:7).

The good "hidden away" for Bnei Yisrael is precisely their eternal root-portion, reserved and stored up for the upright.

"[Goodness] You have wrought for those who take refuge in You" (Tehillim 31:20) — this is when Bnei Yisrael take shelter in His shadow and are separate from the nations, and then holiness is revealed below as well.

The stored-up good is activated when Bnei Yisrael take refuge in Hashem and remain set apart; then their root-holiness becomes revealed even in this world.

And this is the meaning of "before the children of men" (neged bnei adam) (Tehillim 31:20) — and "neged" (opposite/at a distance) refers to being far off, [like] the Shabbos boundary (techum Shabbos), as Chazal said on the verse "they shall encamp at a distance (mineged)" (Bamidbar 2:2).

The word "neged" (at a distance) signals the theme of separation, like the techum boundary — Bnei Yisrael's distinctness and "distance" from the nations is what allows holiness to be revealed.

And this is what Chazal said: wherever you find a "fence of ervah" (gader ervah, restraint regarding forbidden relations), there you find kedushah.

Holiness is consistently found alongside the safeguarding of forbidden relations — restraint and separation are the gateway to kedushah.

For after the sin, good and evil became mixed everywhere, and holiness cannot be present continuously.

Since Adam's sin intermixed good and evil throughout creation, kedushah cannot remain constantly revealed — it comes and goes.

And this is the hint of "Hashem your God walks about in the midst of your camp" (Devarim 23:15).

The phrase "walks about" (mis'halech) hints at the fluctuating, moving nature of Hashem's revealed presence in the camp.

As the Midrash on Bereishis says, "[and they heard the voice of Hashem] walking about toward the direction of the day" (Bereishis 3:8) — leaping up and ascending.

The Midrash describes the Divine Presence "leaping up and ascending" after Adam's sin — a presence that rises and withdraws rather than remaining fixed.

So too "walks about in the midst of your camp" — at times it ascends and descends, concealed and revealed (s'tim v'galya).

The same dynamic applies to the camp of Bnei Yisrael: the divine presence alternately rises and descends, conceals itself and reveals itself — and the avodah is to remain holy and set apart so as to draw it into revelation.

Summary: Hashem is utterly holy and exalted, and He governs the world in a largely hidden way because coarse olam hazeh cannot ordinarily contain open holiness. He chose Bnei Yisrael to mirror this by being holy through separation — set apart from the nations like a rose among thorns. The degree to which Hashem's holiness is revealed in the world depends on human avodah: when Bnei Yisrael sanctify themselves it is as though they sanctify Him. The Shabbos psalm captures the rhythm of concealment and revelation — emunah by "night" and praise by "morning." Bnei Yisrael's bond to their divine root is eternal (unlike the wicked, whose finite root collapses with them), so even in galus Hashem guards their portion, and it is a chesed that the light stays hidden while darkness rules. Holiness is found wherever there is the "fence of ervah," for separation and restraint draw down the divine presence that "walks about" the camp — concealed and revealed, ascending and descending.
